Ahmed has now graduated to junior high school. Since there are no junior high schools in the bush, we consulted the parents of those who graduated to find out the best solution for these children who had never lived in the city. They wanted to find a member of their family or a close friend with whom they could stay. Before I left agadez, I visited all the families, gave them something to help with food, books and tuition for the year and saw the kids settled and happy–if a bit nervous. Ahmed and his sister are with our representative Sidi Mamane’s family. He is one of the six children of Issouf Bazo in school. Issouf has been the guardian at the Tamesna clinic since its opening in 2009. He is an indispensable member of our team. We now call Issouf the mayor of Tamesna. Ahmed is better known as Awalawal which means windmill–because of his energy level. He graduated fourth in his class, just after his big sister Tefeste.
Tefest and Ahmed Issouf will stay in Agadez with Sidi’s family–there I am certain they will have caring supervision and encouragement. Not easy for a nomad kid to be in town.
