Dr. Komp showed a film of his Malian project which was very popular since much of it was in French and they could understand it.
He wanted them to understand theory, which was somewhat difficult to communicate. Especially since I had to figure it out first and then communicate it to them. When he got into the possibilities of lighting houses, having fans and televisions he lost them–not remembering that they don’t have houses. Because of our change in program he did not get a chance to see first hand how the nomads actually live. They then told him that they didn’t want televisions, they wanted water.
He got right on that path and started showing them how to hook up a pump. We had originally planned to put it in our garden north of Agadez at Indoudou, but since we can’t go north we tested it at a friends well in Niamey.
We hooked up the panels and oriented them to the sun.
And in a minute or two–VOILA WATER! The nomads were elated and figuring out how to do this at their own wells.
