In its third year, our microcredit program is designed to promote peace and stability. The loans are made to young men at risk of leaving their home to seek opportunities elsewhere: usually Libya or Algeria, prosperous, but highly unstable countries. If they have no way of earning a living at home they may be tempted by a life of banditry, drug smuggling or terrorism.
This year we made 24 more loans bring our total to date to 91 individuals in 18 communities. These loans have all been repaid in 6 months time and are re-loaned by the youth association management committee that manages them. We are now loaning equally to women’s associations.
NONE of these 91 candidates have left the country, they are all making a living at home.
Thanks to Rotary Club for funding the last two rounds of loans.
