The only way to insure that our matrone training program continues in the long-term is to turn it over to local staff. We have been inching toward this for many years. The biggest step yet was possible when during our last mission we learned that all the essential materials we provide to new trainees are now available in Niger. We have been training local staff and experienced matrones to help with training for some time.
Our first training mission locally staffed and supplied took place in February. Assalama who works at the maternity clinic in Iferouane and has helped us through two training programs took over. The town of Iferouane provided the city hall.

Each trainee was supplied with the essential materials to assist at five births. These include medications and reporting materials so we can compile statistics.

After a final exam to verify that they have understood, each new matrone (traditional birth attendant) received a certificate of completion from the Nomad Foundation.
This is a major step toward sustainability and a proud moment for the Nomad Foundation staff.
