Although nomads are not traditionally gardeners they all have home base wells. We have planted a demonstration garden to serve several purposes: show improved agricultural and irrigation techniques, demonstrate a solar system, grow nutritious moringa, a complete food, that will substitute for the vitamins we have been hand carrying over for our medical missions. Vitamins have cured such serious problems as blindness and paralysis. The moringa is a hearty drought resistant plant that grows well in Niger.
Dried moringa leaves, that can be sprinkled in a sauce used in their traditional diet, will also be a part of the midwives kits for improving prenatal nutrition.
Agriculture on a small scale next to the home base well can improve nutrition for the community and on a larger scale, depending on water available, can provide supplemental income. Drying onions purchased in the market can also improve nutrition and provide an income . When dehydrated, they are light enough for a nomad to carry and will not spoil.
