Running a bush school for nomads is challenging to say the least. In order for our students to be accredited to continue into junior high and high school we must accept the teachers provided by the state. We give them a bonus to encourage good work, but the teachers the state chooses are not always ideal as we found out this year when the government was to send us a married woman (who would not be coming with her husband) from a city on the other side of the country who did not speak Tamachek and had no experience living in the middle of nowhere–which is what the nomads call home. We knew she would not stay with us so we asked for a more appropriate replacement. The replacement arrived the day I left, so no students were yet attending school.
Since nomadic parents are mobile depending on the available pasture and water we never know if the parents are going to stick around and the kids will be able to continue school.
I was able to see some of the children attending junior high and now one is in high school in Agadez.
I am pretty confident that most of the kids will be returning because I have known them and their parents for so long, but I do not have current photos of many of them. I hope you are interested in continuing your sponsorship of one of these kids it only costs $300 per year to sponsor a child through grammar school and $350 in junior high and $400 in High school. This includes school supplies, teacher’s salary or tuition if in Agadez, food and lodging and health care at our Tamesna clinic.
