For over ten years under the direction of Charlene Pidgeon and Abdoulaye Diallo our representative in Mali we have been quietly working in war-torn Mali to support the women in a fistula clinic in Mopti and feeding refugees whose lives have been upended by the terrorist violence there. A generous donor has made it possible to continue this work even though we can no longer go.The terrorists, known by the locals as jihadis have made it a dangerous place to live. Abdoulaye was on a trip with his wife and four young women of his family and his grandson to visit a niece who had recently married in another village, when they encountered the road blocked by jihadis harassing the many cars they had stopped and stealing sheep from one of the trucks. He wrote: “Seeing them hooded and drugged–excitedly waving their weapons was terrifying” This menace continued for three hours while his family panicked. Finally, it seemed one of the jihadis recognized Abdoulaye and went over to speak to the group’s leader who then signaled him to leave. Abdoulaye wrote: “Thanks to God all our lives were saved because one jihadi recognized the benefactor who helped the refugees. Thank you and all the donors who have made this possible and saved my family’s life.”
